The Gap

In anticipation of the Dutch Design Talents 14 book launch on February 6th,
we're happy to share some of the gems that are featured in the book.

On a rainy Monday evening at the end of last autumn,
we formed a fascinating collective of leading creatives from different corners of the Dutch creative industry to talk about the gap between art academies and the creative work practice.

From both the professional angle and a personal view the dialogue on the dynamic between education and work was hosted by our editor-in-chief, in which these leading creatives deconstruct what they feel and think about the phenomenon.

The result is a personal and inspirational exchange between highly bright minds, very likely sparking new interesting thoughts about the subject within everyone who reads it, which hopefully as a result will push the conversation even further in the near future.

Thank you Workshop of Wonders (location),

Emiel Elgersma (recording).

what?

"When I started my first job, and I realized what I’ve had learned: I knew nothing.
It was like starting from zero."

LIZA ENEBEIS

"I never graduated. But that doesn’t mean
I did not have an education. I did,
but my simple philosophy is that
your diploma doesn’t unlock your
creativity or your potential."

MARCEL KAMPMAN

"Maybe it should be more about creating a community. Especially in fashion the system is so rigid. We’re living in such a small country, but everyone is on their own island. Nothing is shared. Although everyone is dealing with the same problems."

PAULINE VAN DONGEN

"Is that something we can add to the vision on which education needs to improve: managing the expectations of the students. That it is just 4 years of freedom, preparation, meeting like-minded people, and not that it is a conclusive period of time."

WILLEM VAN ROOSMALEN

"I truly believe there’s no reason to not know anything now a days, you can start searching for everything quite easily and find the answers wherever they are. If you have that mind set, you can start any journey, it’ll be fun and fine."

NALDEN

"If it doesn’t feel right, do it anyway. If it feels right it’s boring, there is nothing to learn."

MARCEL KAMPMAN
